We are interested in hearing your thoughts, and we
will be giving prizes to the kids with the best responses
to our questions.
All you need to do is follow these instructions: choose
one question from the list below, write an essay of
less than 300 words answering that question, and follow
the rules.

selecting your question)
“The child shall have the right to freedom of
expression; this right shall include freedom to seek,
receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds,
regardless of frontiers, either orally, in writing
or in print, in the form of art, or through any other
media of the child's choice.” (CRC, Article
13, Part 1)
• Do you think children should be able
to ask questions and be given answers when they
want to know something? How would your life be different
if you were not allowed to ask questions?
• or –
• Is it important for you to be able
to make some choices in your own life? How would
your life be different if you were not able to make
any choices about your own life?
• or –
• Do you like being able to draw, act,
paint, dance, and write in your own way? What if
you were not allowed to draw, act, paint, dance,
or write? What if you could only draw what other
people told you to draw?
“States Parties recognize the right of the child
to rest and leisure, to engage in play and recreational
activities appropriate to the age of the child and
to participate freely in cultural life and the arts.”
(CRC, Article 31).
• Do you like to play? How would you
feel if you were not allowed to play? Is it important
for all children to be allowed to play? Why?
• Only youth ages 9-12 may submit an essay
in this category
• All essays must be less than 300 words,
typed or printed very neatly
• All essays must be written and submitted
in English ( U.S. or U.K.) - this may change in time.
• Essays must have: cover page; title; name
of writer; school name/grade/age; address; phone number;
and e-mail, if available
• Essays may be submitted by mail, fax,
or e-mail
• Essays must be original and unpublished
By entering in this essay contest, Youth Advocate
Program International has the right to publish and
use (for non-commercial purposes) any and all essays
submitted. In any case, credit will be given to the
original author.
Entries must be received
by August 6, 2004.
Essay Contest winners will be announced on August
31 on the YAP International website (www.yapi.org).
All writers of winning essays will be notified by
mail, e-mail, or phone, depending on the preference
listed by the contestant in their contact details.
