Kid's Page: Essay Contest

If you are between the ages of 9 and 12, you can enter YAP International's Essay Contest!

We are interested in hearing your thoughts, and we will be giving prizes to the kids with the best responses to our questions.

All you need to do is follow these instructions: choose one question from the list below, write an essay of less than 300 words answering that question, and follow the rules.

Essay Topics  (adults are only welcome to help you with understanding and selecting your question)

“The child shall have the right to freedom of expression; this right shall include freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, regardless of frontiers, either orally, in writing or in print, in the form of art, or through any other media of the child's choice.” (CRC, Article 13, Part 1)

• Do you think children should be able to ask questions and be given answers when they want to know something? How would your life be different if you were not allowed to ask questions?

• or –

• Is it important for you to be able to make some choices in your own life? How would your life be different if you were not able to make any choices about your own life?

• or –

• Do you like being able to draw, act, paint, dance, and write in your own way? What if you were not allowed to draw, act, paint, dance, or write? What if you could only draw what other people told you to draw?

“States Parties recognize the right of the child to rest and leisure, to engage in play and recreational activities appropriate to the age of the child and to participate freely in cultural life and the arts.” (CRC, Article 31).
