Everyone has a Right to go to School
“Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages. Elementary school shall be compulsory.” — The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 26
Some children walk for an hour to get to their school. Some communities cannot afford classroom or desks for students. These students sit outside, on the ground, and that is where they have classes.
One of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) is for every child to have a primary school education by the year 2015. However, there are many things that need to be done before that can happen. Today, many children cannot go to school because there is no school in their community, or their families do not have enough money to pay school fees to buy school supplies. Sometimes the family is so poor the the children have to work all day to help their families pay for food and a place to live.
Do you think every child should have the right to learn and have a primary school education ?
How do you think you could help to make sure every child can go to school ?
Talk about your ideas with classmates, teachers and/or your family. Maybe you can figure out how to help kids go to school, even if it is helping in a small way, it is still helping.
